A film by Anthony Fabian,

Sunday, March 25th, 2012
SKIN, is based on the true story of a black girl who was born to two white Afrikaner parents in South Africa during the apartheid era.

Ten year-old Sandra is distinctly African looking. Her parents are white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. They are shopkeepers in a remote area of the Eastern Transvaal and, despite Sandra’s mixed-race appearance, have lovingly brought her up as their ‘white’ little girl.

By the time she is 17, Sandra realises she is never going to be accepted by the white community. She must live her life, as a black woman in South Africa — with no running water, no sanitation, and little income. But Sandra carries her father's advice with her wherever she goes: 'Never give up!'

What do you think of as Italian architecture? Florence, Rome and Venice? Roman might and Renaissance beauty?

Or do you think of the 600 unfinished municipal buildings across Italy that lie
in wait for the construction teams to return?

Unfinished Italy is their story. It is Italy, home of ruins. It is Italy’s most prominent post-war architectural style. It is buildings that are in limbo between perfection and nothingness, forgotten, ruins before they were ever used, now an integral part of the Italian landscape.

Stadiums without audiences, hospitals without patients, theatres that after 50 years have not yet seen their premiere. This is Unfinished Italy.

The film was an hour long BBC documentary film, titled The Secret World of Haute Couture, and once again we were graced by the directors presence, Margy Kinmonth. The event was brought to our audiences by Dubai Culture and under the patronage of the Dubai International Film Festival. We also had event specific sponsors for the night i.e. Liali Jewellery and Lancome who provided all our female guests with goodie bags and special prizes for the best dressed woman and runner up as well as the film's director. An awards ceremony was held prior to the screening to honour all our sponsors thus far. All in all a fantastic evening. We thank you all for your continued support and look forward to a wonderful line-up of screenings and events for the rest of the year!

The Scene Club is proud to showcase the BBC4 documentary 'The Secret World of Haute Couture' in celebrating Women's Month.

For the women who belong to the haute couture club, spending $100,000 on a dress they will wear only once or twice is quite normal, but to be a member you have to adhere to a strict set of unspoken rules. This is old school fashion: celebrities are a definite no-no.

25th March 2010

Director: Margaret Kinmonth

Film Synopsis:
This documentary uncovers the anachronistic and surprising fairytale world of haute couture through its players past and present, featuring rarely seen archive from the BBC vaults.

Margy Kinmonth takes a journey from Paris to New York and California to meet some of the characters in this much talked about but little explained pocket of the fashion industry. Haute couture is like a private club, but many of its ageing American customers are dying off now and too few wealthy young women are taking their place to ensure its survival. She discovers how much has changed and surprisingly how much has stayed the same in this story of decadent decline.

Since its heyday after the war the number of fashion houses showing haute couture in Paris has fallen from over a hundred to barely a dozen. Margy Kinmonth’s journey takes in a cross section of fashion houses today, visiting behind the scenes of the two remaining giants Dior and Chanel as they battle it out in the days leading up to the big shows. We are given a rare glimpse of the famous Karl Lagerfeld at work drawing in his studio as well as Dior’s John Galliano, veteran Italian designer Valentino and old French favourite Christian Lacroix. We are treated to vintage archive of the early haute couture shows.

The film follows key haute couture customers as they visit Paris to shop for dresses that can cost up to 100,000 dollars each. Kinmonth asks who are these women and why are they prepared to spend so much money on one dress? There are strict rules for belonging to this exclusive shopping club and we set out to find out what the rules of membership are? And why is it all so hush hush?

Runtime: 60 minutes

Language: English
